About Tats People
For centuries Tat was a name other people used. Turkic speakers gave it to the settled, Iranian-speaking populations they lived among, and an eleventh-century Turkic proverb sums up the relationship: there is no Turk without a Tat, just as there is no cap without a head. In the eastern Caucasus the name came to mean the Persian-speaking communities spread between the Caspian shore and the foothills of the Greater Caucasus, and they still carry it. Most historians trace them to settlers and garrison communities that the Sasanian Empire placed along this corridor. That same empire fortified the pass at Derbent. Today Tats live mainly in northeastern Azerbaijan, on the Absheron Peninsula around Baku and in the Quba, Khachmaz, Shabran, Siyazan, Shamakhi and Ismayilli districts. A smaller community lives in southern Dagestan.
Their language, also called Tat, belongs to the southwestern branch of Iranian. That makes it a close relative of Persian. Despite the similar name, it is not closely related to the Tati dialects of northwestern Iran. In Azerbaijan it is an island of Iranian speech surrounded by Turkic. Nearly every speaker is bilingual, and over the past century many families dropped Tat in favor of Azerbaijani. Official counts now come to a few tens of thousands, while many more people had grandparents who spoke Tat. The language is endangered.
