That language belongs to the Oto-Pamean branch of the Oto-Manguean family. Its closest relative is Pame, spoken in San Luis Potosí. More distant relatives include Otomí and Mazahua, whose speakers ring central Mexico. Like its relatives, it is tonal. It has held on with a few thousand speakers. That's a small number, but it counts for a lot in a region where many northern languages disappeared, leaving little more than scattered words in colonial records.
The turning point in their history was the Chichimeca War of the second half of the sixteenth century. The war began when the silver strikes at Zacatecas pushed wagon roads, mining towns and cattle into nomad territory. Decades of ambushes and punishing expeditions failed to settle it. In the end, the Spanish changed tactics. They negotiated, handed out food and cloth, founded missions and planted colonies of Indigenous allies from farther south. San Luis de la Paz dates from that era of settlement, and the Jonaz community there grew up around the mission. Jonaz bands in the rugged Sierra Gorda held out much longer, resisting Spanish control well into the eighteenth century.
Life in Misión de Chichimecas today looks a lot like life in other rural communities in the semi-arid uplands of Guanajuato: small rain-fed plots, some livestock, wage work in town, and a steady stream of people leaving for Mexican cities or the United States. Catholicism sets the religious calendar, and the community organizes its own feast days. No single custom is what sets the Jonaz apart. What stands out is that they're still here. For centuries outsiders filed them under "wild northerners", and they still kept their language, stayed in their home ground and kept their own name for themselves.
