About Carijona People
The Carijona are a Cariban-speaking people of the Colombian Amazon, and that fact alone sets them apart from almost everyone around them. In the 1840s they numbered in the thousands and lived along the Caquetá and Yarí rivers and nearby waterways. Early ethnographers wrote down several related groups under names such as Hianacoto and Umaua. The century that followed was a disaster. Wars with Witotoan peoples killed many of them, and then the rubber boom arrived. Rubber companies in the Caquetá and Putumayo basins ran on forced Indigenous labor, debt bondage and open violence, and the Carijona were among the peoples crushed by that system. By the twentieth century they were widely described as virtually extinct.
They did not disappear, but the people who survived are few and spread out. Some Carijona families live among the Coreguaje, a Tucanoan-speaking people of Caquetá, and have partly joined that community through marriage and living together. Another line descends from Salvador Perea, an Afro-Colombian man, and a Carijona woman. Their descendants kept the Carijona name and identity. That history shows how people in the region rebuilt after the rubber years: identity passed through family and memory as much as through unbroken ancestry.
The language is the most fragile part of what remains. In recent decades only a handful of elders have spoken it, and daily life now happens mostly in Spanish. Contact with missions and settlers changed religious life, and traditional shamanic knowledge survives only in pieces. What makes the Carijona a distinct people today is partly a matter of choice: a small community that knows its history, knows how close it came to vanishing, and still claims the name.
