About Guayabero People
The Guayabero call themselves Jiw, which simply means people, and they are a river people in the most literal sense: almost everything about their life is organized around the Guaviare, the wide, silt-heavy river that marks the line between Colombia's eastern plains and the Amazon forest. Their communities sit along its middle course, in a handful of small reserves in the departments of Guaviare and Meta, several of them within reach of the frontier town of San José del Guaviare. The outside name comes from the Guayabero River, one of the two streams that join to form the Guaviare. They number in the low thousands at most, and older sources also record them as Mitua or Cunimía.
Their language belongs to the small Guahiban family, which makes them linguistic cousins of the much larger Sikuani and of the Cuiba of the plains. Guayabero is the outlier of that family, different enough that speakers of the other languages cannot follow it. It is also unusually healthy for a language with so few speakers: children grow up in it, and many adults, women especially, use little Spanish.
Until a few generations ago the Jiw moved seasonally along the river, fishing, hunting, gathering palm fruit and clearing small gardens. Much of that pattern survives in compressed form. Bitter manioc remains the staple, grated, pressed and toasted into cassava bread and the coarse meal called mañoco. Fishing matters more than hunting, and women twist fiber from cumare and moriche palm into hammocks, bags and baskets, some of which are sold in town. Shamans still treat illness, and missionary Christianity, which arrived in the second half of the twentieth century, sits alongside older ideas rather than replacing them.
The harder part of the story is recent. The middle Guaviare became coca country and then a war zone, contested by guerrillas, paramilitaries and the army. Jiw families were pushed off their land, injured by landmines, and crowded into reserves too small to feed them, including Barrancón, which sits beside a military training base. In 2009 Colombia's Constitutional Court named the Jiw among the indigenous peoples at risk of physical and cultural extermination, and a follow-up order in 2012 demanded specific protection for them and for their neighbors the Nukak. Those orders have been only partly carried out. Malnutrition, displacement and land pressure from settlers and cattle remain everyday concerns, and Jiw leaders spend much of their energy on a plain demand: enough secure territory along the river to go on living as the river people they still are.
