About Asia Minor Slavs People
The Asia Minor Slavs were Slavs whom Byzantine emperors moved from the Balkans into northwestern Anatolia, in present-day Turkey, between the 650s and the 760s. Within a few generations they had blended into the Greek-speaking Christian population of the empire, and no living community descends from them as a distinct people. What made them a group was not a homeland of their own choosing but imperial policy. They came out of the Sklaviniai, the self-governing Slavic districts that had spread across Macedonia and Thrace. The empire planted them across the Bosporus, mostly in Bithynia within the military province of Opsikion, to farm and to fight. Constans II campaigned against the Sklaviniai in 658 and is thought to have brought captives east. Justinian II moved far larger numbers after his Balkan campaign of 688 to 689. He raised a Slavic force reported at 30,000 men and called it his laos periousios, a biblical phrase for a chosen people. In 762 Constantine V settled another wave along the Artanas river: Slavs fleeing Bulgaria, recorded at 208,000.
Their loyalty was thin. In the mid-660s some 5,000 Slavs in Anatolia joined an Arab raiding army and were settled near Apamea in Syria. At Sebastopolis in 692, about 20,000 of Justinian's Slavic soldiers under a commander named Neboulos went over to the Umayyads in the middle of the battle and cost him the fight. The chronicler Theophanes says the emperor then turned on the Slavic families left behind in Bithynia. Historians distrust his figures, but a lead seal from the mid-690s refers to enslaved Slavs in Bithynia, which suggests the revenge was real. Most settlers arrived as pagans, and the church followed them. Bishops of a Bithynian see called Gordoservon, whose name seems to preserve the Serbs, appear in church council records from 680 onward, so at least some settlers had Christian leadership within a generation. Their early South Slavic speech was hemmed in by Greek and faded. Over the next few centuries they dropped out of the record as a separate people, well before the Seljuk conquest. The Muslim Bosniaks and Pomaks who moved to Anatolia under the late Ottomans are a separate and far later story. What remains is a scatter of chronicle entries, seals and council signatures, and a clear picture of Byzantium moving whole populations around like pieces on a frontier map.
