About Aguaruna People
The Aguaruna call themselves Awajún, and the difference matters to them: the first name came from outside, the second is the one they answer to. They live in the upper Marañón basin of northern Peru, where the last Andean foothills break apart into rainforest, along the Cenepa, the Nieva, the Santiago and the Chiriaco. It is broken country, hard to cross and easy to vanish into, and that has something to do with why their history has no chapter of conquest in it. The Inca advance stopped short. Spanish prospectors pushed in during the sixteenth century, put mining towns on Jivaroan land, and were driven back out. Rubber traders and missionaries came later and were resisted, absorbed, or outlasted. After the Asháninka, the Awajún are the most numerous Indigenous people in the Peruvian Amazon.
Their language belongs to the Chicham family, spoken also by the Wampis, Shuar, Achuar and Shiwiar, and connected to nothing else linguists have been able to establish. Chicham is the speakers' own word for speech, and it replaced Jivaroan, a Spanish mangling that had curdled into an insult. The older cosmology has held up better than most. Power comes from arutam, a vision sought alone by fasting at a waterfall, sometimes with tobacco water or a brugmansia preparation, and a person who has seen one is understood to be harder to kill. Women sing anen, private songs addressed to manioc plants, to hunting dogs, to absent husbands. Anen are property: inherited or bought, and a woman who knows good ones has something worth having. Nazarene and Catholic missions have worked the Marañón for generations and most Awajún would call themselves Christian, but the two systems run alongside each other rather than one having replaced the other.
Outsiders still reduce all of this to shrunken heads. The tsantsa was real, a ritual for containing the soul of a killed enemy, and it ended generations ago, kept in circulation since mostly by fakes sold to tourists. Inside Peru the Awajún are known for something else: organizing. They founded one of the country's first Amazonian Indigenous federations in the 1970s, and in June 2009 they and the Wampis blockaded the highway outside Bagua against decrees that would have opened titled communal land to oil and mining. The police operation to clear the road left thirty three people dead, police and protesters both. The decrees were repealed, and Peru's prior consultation law followed. Awajún communities have been in court over gold dredging and land title ever since. Their children still grow up speaking Awajún, which in the Amazon is not a small thing.
