About Zoks People
The Zoks are Armenians, yet for generations other Armenians saw them as a people apart. The main reason was their speech. The Zok or Agulis dialect is one of the most divergent forms of Armenian on record, and outsiders found it hard to follow. That dialect, a small home district and a strong merchant tradition gave the Zoks a clearer identity than most regional Armenian communities ever had.
Their home was Goghtn, a valley district on the north side of the Aras River. Today it is the Ordubad District of Nakhchivan, the Azerbaijani exclave between Armenia, Iran and Turkey. Its center was Agulis, called Aylis in Azerbaijani, a town of orchards and churches with smaller villages around it. The Persian border lay close, and trade across it shaped the town. Zok merchants worked the routes into Persia and the Russian Empire. By the nineteenth century many had settled in Tiflis, where they joined the city's large Armenian merchant class.
The Zoks belonged to the Armenian Apostolic Church, and the church was the center of public life in Agulis. The town had an unusual number of churches for its size, and the monastery of Saint Thomas stood among them. Wealth and piety went together in a merchant town like this one, and the churches were where the community showed both.
Zok life in Goghtn ended in December 1919, during the fighting over Nakhchivan after the Russian Empire collapsed. Agulis was sacked and burned, many residents were killed, and the survivors scattered toward Armenia and Tiflis. The Armenian population never returned. Nakhchivan ended up under Soviet Azerbaijan, and the churches of Agulis, like most Armenian monuments in the region, have since been destroyed.
Today the Zoks survive as a lineage and a memory more than a community living on its own land. Descendants live mostly in Armenia, Georgia and Russia, and some still call themselves Zok or trace their families to Agulis. The dialect has fared worse. Linguists recorded it in detail in the twentieth century, but families switched to standard Armenian and Russian, and it is now close to disappearing. For scholars of Armenian, it is still a valuable record of how the language split into regional forms over the centuries.
