About Yaghan People
The Yaghan are the people of the water at the bottom of the world. For thousands of years they lived in and around bark canoes among the channels and islands south of the Beagle Channel, from Navarino and Hoste down to the Wollaston group and Cape Horn, territory now split between Chile and Argentina. No other people has made a permanent home farther south. Their own name for themselves, Yámana, means roughly "living human." The name Yaghan was borrowed by the missionary Thomas Bridges from Yahga, a stretch of the Murray Channel, and it stuck.
Everything about the old life turned on the canoe. Each family kept a fire burning on a bed of clay and sand in the hull, so a group of canoes moving through the channels was a line of small lights on the water. Women paddled, and women dove for mussels and limpets in water a few degrees above freezing. They were the swimmers, and most men never learned. Men speared sea lions and birds with bone-tipped harpoons. Clothing was a sealskin or otter cape and a coat of grease and paint. Shell middens along the shores record some six thousand years of this. Robert FitzRoy carried four Yaghan, including Jemmy Button, to England in 1830 and brought the survivors back on the Beagle with Darwin aboard. The Anglican mission at Ushuaia followed in 1869, then sealers, gold seekers, an Argentine naval post, and measles. Perhaps three thousand Yaghan in the early 1880s became a few hundred within twenty years. The Austrian priest Martin Gusinde photographed the Chiejaus initiation and the masked Kina ceremony in the early 1920s, and the painted bodies in those pictures are what most people now see when they hear the name. Cristina Calderón, the last person raised speaking the language, died in 2022. Her home was Villa Ukika, the Yaghan community beside Puerto Williams on Navarino Island, where relatives and neighbors still weave tight rush baskets, build miniature bark canoes, and teach the language from recordings and Bridges' notebooks. More than a thousand people in Chile and a smaller number in Argentina identify as Yaghan today. The old belief in Watauinewa, a remote high god, and in the yekamush shamans has mostly given way to Catholicism. The sense of belonging to those channels has not.
