About Volhynians People
The Volhynians were an East Slavic tribal union of the ninth and tenth centuries. They lived between the Western Bug and the upper Pripyat basin, in what is now northwestern Ukraine, and their lands reached into eastern Poland and southwestern Belarus. Kyiv had absorbed them before the year 1000. Their descendants are among the Ukrainians who still call the region Volyn.
What set them apart was less a bloodline than a name that kept being reissued. The Kyivan Primary Chronicle says the Buzhans, named for the Bug River, later came to be called Volhynians. It also places the older Dulebes on the Bug "where the Volhynians are now." The country stayed the same and the people stayed broadly the same, but the label changed. The new label came from a stronghold called Volyn, usually identified with the hillfort at Gródek on what is today the Polish bank of the river. The chronicle also keeps a grim folk memory from the Dulebian past: Avar overlords who harnessed Dulebian women to their carts in place of horses.
Outsiders noticed them too. A ninth-century Bavarian list of peoples beyond the Frankish frontier names the Velunzani and credits them with seventy strongholds. The tenth-century Arab writer al-Masudi describes a Slavic people, the Walinana, whose ruler once held other Slavs in obedience. Both are often read as the Volhynians or their Dulebian forebears, though neither identification is settled.
They spoke an early East Slavic speech close to that of their Drevlian and Polanian neighbors. They practiced Slavic paganism until Christianity came from Kyiv at the end of the tenth century and spread slowly from princely towns into the villages. Their land became a hinge between two emerging states. In 981 Prince Volodymyr of Kyiv took the Cherven towns on their western edge from the Poles. The town of Volodymyr, traditionally said to be named for him, became the seat of the Principality of Volhynia. From then on the chronicle speaks of princes and cities rather than a tribe. In 1199 Volhynia joined Galicia in a single Rus state.
The tribal name dropped out of use, but the land name did not. Volyn Oblast carries it today. So do the Volhynian dialects of Ukrainian and the nineteenth-century settlers known as Volhynian Germans and Volhynian Czechs. All of them trace back to a word that began as the name of one riverside fort.
