About Abzakh People
Ask a Circassian which tribe, and Abzakh is one of twelve possible answers: twelve tribes, twelve gold stars on the green flag. The Abzakh were the most numerous of them and, by reputation, the least governable. In the late eighteenth century their commoners broke the power of the hereditary nobility, and after that Abzakh business was settled in open assembly, the khase, rather than by princes. What was decided there bound everyone who had stood up to argue it. Their country was the northern slope of the western Caucasus: beech and oak forest cut by the valleys of the Kurdzhips, Pshekha, Pshish and Psekups, rivers running down toward the Kuban in what is now the Russian republic of Adygea and Krasnodar Krai. Highland Abzakh kept to the upper valleys with horses, cattle and small fields; lowland Abzakh farmed the foothills and dealt more with the plain, and the two halves are still counted separately.
They speak Adyghe, or West Circassian, one of the Northwest Caucasian languages, a small family whose only living relatives are Kabardian, Abaza and Abkhaz, with no established connection to anything outside the Caucasus. It carries an enormous consonant inventory against a famously thin set of vowels. The Abzakh dialect is conservative and distinct enough that other speakers place it at once, and because the literary standard in Adygea was built on Temirgoy, Abzakh at home read and write a version of their language that is not quite their own. Islam arrived late and only took firm hold in the nineteenth century, Sunni and Hanafi. During the war with Russia, Muhammad Amin, sent west from Dagestan as Shamil's deputy, set up sharia courts across Abzakh country, putting the new law in open competition with Xabze, the customary code governing hospitality, deference to elders, composure in public, and the obligations owed to a guest. Xabze did not lose. The war ended in 1864 with the mass expulsion of the Circassians to the Ottoman Empire, and the Abzakh went almost entirely. Most alive today are in Turkey, with communities in Jordan, Syria and a village in the Galilee, and only a remnant left in the Caucasus. The dzhegu, the dance gathering run by an appointed master of ceremonies, is still where a good deal of that identity gets handed down.
