About Akhvakh People
The Akhvakh call themselves Ashvado, and their modern history is largely the story of that name being overruled. Before 1930 Soviet ethnographers listed them as a people in their own right. After it they were entered on forms as Avars, along with the other small nations of the western Dagestani highlands, on the reasoning that a shared literary language and a shared faith made the distinction administrative rather than real. The language did not agree. When the 2002 Russian census reopened the question, several thousand people wrote Akhvakh again.
They live in the high western corner of Dagestan, in the side gorges above the Andi Koysu and the Avar Koysu, where stone villages are built in tiers up the slope so that one house's roof serves as the next one's yard. The northern group holds the district that carries their name. A smaller southern group sits in a few villages further up the Avar Koysu, and northerners find their speech noticeably strange. A third community has been at Akhvakh-Dere, near Zaqatala in Azerbaijan, since the nineteenth century. Their language belongs to the Andic branch of Northeast Caucasian, a family of very close neighbors and very poor mutual comprehension: Karata, Tindi, Botlikh and Chamalal are all spoken within a day's walk and none of them can be followed without study. Akhvakh has a heavy consonant inventory, a gender system that sorts nouns into agreement classes, and no writing of its own. Avar carries the sermon and the schoolbook, Russian everything official.
Islam here is Sunni, of the Shafi'i school, and old enough to be unremarkable. It moved through these mountains slowly, hardened into the political ground of Shamil's imamate in the 1800s, went quiet under the Soviets, and came back into the open after 1991 with the village mosques rebuilt. Daily life still runs partly on the tukhum, the patrilineal kin group that decides whom you help and whom your children marry. Sheep are the other constant: flocks go down to winter pasture on the plain and come back in spring, and a great many families now keep a foot in both places, a house in the village and work in the lowland towns.
