Their dealings with Kyiv swung between war and partnership. The chronicle has Prince Oleg fighting them in 885. Yet in its account of 907, Tivertsi march in the army he led against Constantinople, described with the word tolkoviny, which scholars read either as allies or as interpreters. The second reading suits a people living on the route between the Slavic interior and Byzantium's Danube frontier. They joined Prince Igor's campaign of 944 as well, and after that the chronicle says nothing more about them.
They farmed, kept livestock, and lived in open villages and fortified hilltop settlements. Hillforts in central Moldova such as Echimăuți and Alcedar are often attributed to them or to their close neighbors. They practiced the older Slavic polytheism until Christianity reached them, either through Kyiv after 988 or earlier through contact with Bulgaria and Byzantium along the Danube. Their weakness was geography. The open steppe to their south became a corridor for nomads, first the Pechenegs and later the Cumans. The Tivertsi appear to have been pushed north and absorbed into the populations of the Carpathian foothills and the upper Dniester.
Who they were is still argued over. Soviet scholarship claimed them firmly as East Slavs, while other historians see a mixed borderland population that also drew on older Romance-speaking and steppe communities. The debate stays alive because the land is still contested ground for national histories. It is split today between Moldova and Ukraine, and the Tivertsi are one of the earliest names either side can point to on the map.
