About Děčané People
The Děčané were a small West Slavic group of early medieval Bohemia, settled in the ninth and tenth centuries along the Elbe around what is now Děčín in the northern Czech Republic. They were absorbed into the Přemyslid duchy before the year 1000, and their descendants dissolved into the Czech nation. What identifies them is a place: the last basin of the Elbe before the river cuts through the sandstone gorge into Saxony, a narrow strip of farmable ground hemmed in by forested highlands that stayed thinly settled until the colonization of the thirteenth century.
Nearly everything known about them hangs on one word. A charter issued for the bishopric of Prague in 1086, which claims to describe the diocese's borders as they stood at its founding in the 970s, lists the peoples along its edge, and among them appears a name spelled something like Dazana, usually read as the Děčané, set beside the Litoměřici and the Lemuzi. That is the whole written record. No prince of the Děčané is named, no battle, no treaty. Their neighbors upriver were those two groups and the Pšované near Mělník. Across the mountains to the north lived Sorbian-speaking peoples, the Nisane of the Dresden basin and the Milceni of Upper Lusatia. The Děčané spoke the same early Slavic dialects as the rest of Bohemia, the speech that became Old Czech, and they kept the old Slavic gods until Christianity spread outward from the Přemyslid court in the course of the tenth century.
Their position mattered more than their numbers. The Elbe was the road between Bohemia and Saxony, and whoever held the rock above the mouth of the Ploučnice controlled what moved along it. The Přemyslids built a castle there, and later documents speak of a Děčín province, a castle district run for the duke rather than a people. The group's name and the town's name are clearly tied together, though which came first is an open question.
So is the larger one. Older Czech scholarship pictured Bohemia as a patchwork of separate tribes that the Přemyslids conquered one by one, the Děčané among them. Many historians now doubt it, and read the names in the 1086 charter as regional labels for districts of a single Bohemian people rather than independent tribes. On that reading the Děčané were simply the Bohemians who lived at Děčín. Either way, no local line of memory reaches back to them: the district was German-speaking for centuries, most of its people were expelled after 1945, and the families in Děčín today largely arrived after that. The legacy is a name on the map and one line in a charter.
