Tojolabal belongs to the Q'anjob'alan branch of the Mayan family. Its closest relative is Chuj, spoken across the border in the Cuchumatán highlands of Guatemala. The German-born philosopher Carlos Lenkersdorf worked with Tojolabal communities for decades and built much of his writing around the grammar. He focused on the constant first-person plural ending -tik, and on sentences where speaker and listener both act. Where Spanish says "I told you," Tojolabal says something closer to "I said, you heard." He read this as a way of thinking built on "we" rather than "I," and that argument carried the language well beyond Chiapas.
Their modern history is mostly a history of land. Through the nineteenth century and well into the twentieth, many Tojolabal families lived on the large estates around Comitán. They worked the owner's fields without pay in exchange for the right to farm a plot of their own. People still call that period the time of the baldío. Land reform broke up the estates slowly and unevenly into ejidos, or communal farms. When land ran short, families moved east into the valleys of the Lacandon Jungle to clear new fields. Catholic catechists and peasant organizations grew strong in those settlements, and on January 1, 1994, the Zapatista army took the town of Las Margaritas. Many Tojolabal communities joined the movement, and some still live as self-governing Zapatista villages.
Most Tojolabal are Catholic, and the local church was shaped by the catechist movement of the Diocese of San Cristóbal de las Casas, which put Bible study and village meetings in local hands. Evangelical congregations have grown alongside it. For many families the year still turns on the maize crop. Women's dress is the clearest outward sign of the group: full skirts in bright colors worn with blouses trimmed in ribbon and embroidery.
