About Sutagao People
The Sutagao were an Indigenous people who lived in the valleys and high moorland south of the Bogotá savanna, in what is now Colombia, until the Spanish conquest of the 1500s. After that they faded into the rural mestizo population of southern Cundinamarca. What set them apart was the ground they held. Their country ran from the cold, misty Sumapaz páramo, often called the largest páramo in the world, down through the milder valley around Fusagasugá toward the hot slopes that fall to the Magdalena River. That put them in the middle. The Muisca held the high plateau to the north, the Panche held the lower ground to the west, and the Sutagao were wedged between the two.
Almost nothing of their own words survives. Their language is usually placed in the Chibchan family and assumed to be close to Muysccubun, the Muisca language. That idea rests on place names and the thin notes of early colonial officials, not on any real record of the language. Their religious life was lost the same way: almost none of it was written down before Catholic missionaries replaced it.
Before the Spanish arrived, the biggest blow came from their neighbors. In the late fifteenth century the zipa Saguamanchica, who ruled the southern Muisca from Bacatá, marched south and forced the Sutagao to pay tribute. That rule was barely two generations old when Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada's expedition climbed onto the plateau in 1537 and brought down the Muisca order that had taken them in. Colonial rule then ran its usual course here. Land and labor were handed to Spanish grantees, the population fell sharply, and survivors were gathered into Spanish-style towns. Fusagasugá was formally organized in 1592.
What they left behind is mostly in the landscape. Fusagasugá and the towns around it still carry Indigenous names, and the archaeology of the area is hard to separate from the Muisca's. The gold votive raft that is now the best-known piece in Bogotá's Museo del Oro was found in 1969 in a cave at Pasca, next door to Fusagasugá. The Sutagao no longer exist as a distinct people, but their descendants are part of the mixed rural population that still farms these slopes.
