About Souliotes People
The Souliotes were an Orthodox Christian, Albanian-speaking tribal community who held the mountains of Souli in Epirus, in what is now northwestern Greece, from roughly the sixteenth century until Ali Pasha of Ioannina finally broke them in 1803. What survived the fall was not a people in place but a scattering of clans: to Parga, to Corfu and the other Ionian Islands, into foreign regiments, and eventually back across the water to fight in the Greek War of Independence. Their descendants are Greeks, and the Souliote name now lives in national memory rather than in any standing community.
Souli was hard, poor country above the Acheron gorge, and that was the point of it. Four core villages, Souli, Kiafa, Avariko and Samoniva, sat on ground that could be defended by a few dozen men and could not be farmed into prosperity, so the Souliotes ran flocks and levied tribute on dozens of lowland villages instead. There was no chief. Authority sat with the fara, the patrilineal clan, and names like Botsaris, Tzavellas, Drakos and Zervas carried it, often into feuds with one another. At home they spoke Albanian, in church they heard Greek, and most men worked comfortably in both. Women were armed and expected to fight, which was unusual enough that outsiders kept writing it down.
Ali Pasha spent fifteen years on them and won in December 1803. The endings became the legend: the monk Samuel blowing the powder store at Kougki rather than hand it over, and the women at Zalongo going off the cliff with their children instead of surrendering, a scene now carved into a monument on the ridge and taught to Greek schoolchildren. The survivors took service under Russian, French and then British colors in the Ionians, where Markos Botsaris put together a Greek-Albanian lexicon in 1809, and came back in 1821 as some of the most experienced soldiers the revolution had. Botsaris died at Karpenisi in 1823. Byron, who had already sat for his portrait in the pleated Souliote kilt, hired Souliotes as his guard at Missolonghi. Kitsos Tzavellas ended up prime minister of Greece. The community itself never reformed in Souli, and the villages are quiet now.
