The Riđani were a medieval Vlach herding community in the uplands of Old Herzegovina. By the time Vlachs of this region appear in writing, they spoke the same Shtokavian Slavic dialect as the farmers in the valleys below. Older Romance traces still survived in personal names and in the words herders used for their work. They were Orthodox Christians. The name sounds like riđ, the local word for russet or red-haired, but it is uncertain whether the name really comes from that word.
Their economy tied the mountains to the sea. Highland Vlachs of Herzegovina drove livestock and carried goods on pack horses between the interior and the Adriatic coast. The archives of Dubrovnik are full of caravan contracts, debts and disputes naming katuns and their leaders, and those records are how most herding groups of the region are known at all. Their lands sat on a contested frontier that passed between Serbian rulers and Bosnian nobles. In the 15th century it came under the Kosača lords, whose title of herceg (duke) gave Herzegovina its name.
The Ottoman conquest of Herzegovina in the late 15th century broke up that system. For a time, Ottoman registers still taxed Vlach communities as a separate category. Over the following centuries, though, the old katun names gave way to the brotherhoods and tribes of Old Herzegovina and Montenegro. Some of those tribes, like the Banjani and Drobnjaci, had themselves grown out of medieval katuns. The Riđani did not last as a separate people. Their descendants are part of the Orthodox highland population around Nikšić, and the name survives in the local geography.
