About Opici People
The Opici were an ancient people of Campania, the fertile plain around the Bay of Naples in southern Italy, who lived there from the early Iron Age until Samnite conquerors absorbed them in the late 5th century BC, leaving their name to the Oscans and no community of their own. Almost everything known about them comes from outsiders. When Greek settlers founded Cumae in the 8th century BC, they called the locals Opikoi and the country Opicia, and Thucydides still placed Cumae "in Opicia" three centuries later. He also credited the Opici with driving the Sicels off the mainland and over to Sicily, a tradition that casts them as one of the older powers of the Italian south.
Who exactly they were was already disputed in antiquity. Antiochus of Syracuse and Aristotle treated the Opici and the Ausones as one people under two names. Polybius counted them as two. Modern scholars are not much better placed: the Opici left no literature, and the few early inscriptions from Campania are too scrappy to settle what they spoke. It was probably an Italic language, and some researchers place it closer to Latin than to the Oscan that replaced it. Archaeologists usually connect them with the Iron Age trench-grave cemeteries of Campania, including the native burials at Cumae that predate the Greek colony: farming communities that buried their dead unburned, with bronze brooches, pottery and the occasional imported trinket.
Their end was absorption, not disappearance. Campania drew in Greeks on the coast, Etruscans at Capua, and then Samnite highlanders, who seized both Capua and Cumae in the 420s BC. The newcomers' language swamped the plain, yet it took the old inhabitants' name: the Greek Opikoi matches an early Latin Opsci, later worn down to Osci, and the speech of the Samnites has been called Oscan ever since. The name probably goes back to an Italic root for work or abundance, the one behind Latin ops and opus, which would make the Opici something like the people who work the land.
The word had a long and unkind afterlife. Greeks used it as a slur for unlettered Italians, and Cato the Elder complained that they smeared Romans with it too. By Juvenal's day Romans had adopted the insult themselves: in his satires the mice that gnaw through a poor man's Greek books are opici, barbarians with no taste. A people who once held some of the best farmland in Italy survive mainly as the name of someone else's language and as an ancient byword for the uncultured, which says more about who wrote the histories than about the Opici.
