About Lengua People
Lengua is Spanish for tongue, and none of the people it names ever used it for themselves. The Enxet live in the south, toward the Paraguay River in Presidente Hayes. The Enlhet live to the north, across the dry interior around the Mennonite towns of Boquerón. Enxet and Enlhet are separate languages, but they are close enough that the kinship is obvious. They are the largest members of the small Enlhet-Enenlhet family, formerly called Maskoian. The family's other languages, Angaité, Sanapaná, Guaná and Toba-Maskoy, belong to neighbors in the same stretch of the Chaco. Beyond that circle the language map gets crowded: Nivaclé to the west, Guarani and Spanish everywhere, and Low German among the Mennonite ranchers that many Enlhet work for.
Their modern history turns on land. After the War of the Triple Alliance, the Paraguayan state sold the Chaco in huge blocks to private buyers. Enxet territory became cattle estancias, and the Enxet worked on them. Anglican missionaries from Britain's South American Missionary Society arrived in the late 1880s. Wilfrid Barbrooke Grubb's An Unknown People in an Unknown Land is still the best-known outside account of those years. The Enlhet met a different wave: Mennonite settlers, first from Canada and then from the Soviet Union, who began founding colonies on Enlhet land in 1927. Soon after, the Chaco War between Bolivia and Paraguay was fought through the same scrub.
Christianity came through those two channels and still splits along them. Anglican congregations are common among the Enxet and Mennonite ones among the Enlhet. Under both, older ideas about dreams, spirits and the healing work of shamans hang on. Most families now live in settled communities and work on ranches, in Mennonite businesses or on small plots. Hunting and honey gathering continue where the forest allows. Land is still the central fight. The Enxet communities of Yakye Axa and Sawhoyamaxa spent years in roadside camps before winning cases against Paraguay at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in 2005 and 2006. Those rulings are now cited in Indigenous land disputes across the Americas.
