About Koreguaje People
The Koreguaje are the northernmost of the Western Tukanoan peoples, a small Amazonian nation living where the Andean foothills of southern Colombia flatten into rainforest. Their communities line the middle Orteguaza River and a stretch of the Caquetá below it, in Caquetá department, downstream of the regional capital, Florencia. They call themselves Korebaju; Koreguaje is the spelling that stuck in Spanish records and on maps. They number in the low thousands and have spent the last century holding a piece of piedmont that nearly everyone else wanted for something.
Their language belongs to the Tukanoan family, specifically its western branch, which puts them in the same linguistic household as the Siona and Secoya farther south in Putumayo and across the border in Ecuador and Peru. Over the last two centuries the Koreguaje also absorbed the remnants of two neighboring peoples, the Tama, whose related language is now extinct, and the Carib-speaking Carijona, so that some families carry a grandparent's different ancestry. Catholic missions reached the Caquetá in the colonial period and returned in force under the Capuchins in the early twentieth century, and the faith has been part of Koreguaje life ever since. Yagé nights remain the central collective ritual. Daily life still runs on the chagra, a cleared forest garden of cassava, plantain and maize, and on the river for fish. What has shaped the Koreguaje most in living memory is pressure from outside. Rubber tappers, then waves of settlers from the Andean interior, then coca and the armed conflict that followed it turned Caquetá into contested ground, and a people on its main rivers could not stay out of the way. Armed groups on both sides killed leaders and drove families off the river in the 1990s and 2000s. In 2009 Colombia's Constitutional Court named the Koreguaje among the indigenous peoples at risk of physical and cultural disappearance because of the war. They answered by organizing, through their own regional council and a network of cabildos, and by pressing for legal title to their resguardos. That they are still on the Orteguaza, still holding yagé ceremonies and still teaching the language, is the point of the story rather than a footnote to it.
