Kazakhs comprise approximately 71% of the Kazakhstan population per the 2021 Census — about 13.5 million in Kazakhstan, plus the substantial cross-border diaspora: ~1.6 million in China (Xinjiang's Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture and surrounding regions), ~120,000+ in Mongolia (Bayan-Ölgii Province), ~40,000+ in Uzbekistan, ~10,000+ in Russia (Astrakhan Oblast and Orenburg Oblast), plus diaspora communities in Turkey, Iran, Germany, and elsewhere. The Kazakhs are a Turkic-language-speaking, traditionally pastoral-nomadic Sunni Muslim people of the Eurasian steppe whose ethnogenesis traces to the 15th-16th c. consolidation of various Mongol-period and pre-Mongol Turkic and Mongol-Turkic populations of the Kazakh steppe. The Kazakh language is part of the Kipchak branch of the Turkic family (closely related to Karakalpak, Nogai, and Crimean Tatar), traditionally written in Arabic script (pre-1929) and Cyrillic (1940-2025) — Kazakhstan is currently transitioning to a Latin-script standard. Genome-wide studies (Yunusbayev et al. 2015, Balanovsky et al. 2017) place average Kazakh ancestry at approximately 65-70% East Asian / Mongol-source and 30-35% West Eurasian — among the most clearly admixed populations of inner Eurasia, reflecting the extensive Mongol-period and pre-Mongol Turkic-Mongol cultural and demographic exchange across the Eurasian steppe.
