About Kazakh People
Kazakhs comprise approximately 71% of the Kazakhstan population per the 2021 Census — about 13.5 million in Kazakhstan, plus the substantial cross-border diaspora: ~1.6 million in China (Xinjiang's Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture and surrounding regions), ~120,000+ in Mongolia (Bayan-Ölgii Province), ~40,000+ in Uzbekistan, ~10,000+ in Russia (Astrakhan Oblast and Orenburg Oblast), plus diaspora communities in Turkey, Iran, Germany, and elsewhere. The Kazakhs are a Turkic-language-speaking, traditionally pastoral-nomadic Sunni Muslim people of the Eurasian steppe whose ethnogenesis traces to the 15th-16th c. consolidation of various Mongol-period and pre-Mongol Turkic and Mongol-Turkic populations of the Kazakh steppe. The Kazakh language is part of the Kipchak branch of the Turkic family (closely related to Karakalpak, Nogai, and Crimean Tatar), traditionally written in Arabic script (pre-1929) and Cyrillic (1940-2025) — Kazakhstan is currently transitioning to a Latin-script standard. Genome-wide studies (Yunusbayev et al. 2015, Balanovsky et al. 2017) place average Kazakh ancestry at approximately 65-70% East Asian / Mongol-source and 30-35% West Eurasian — among the most clearly admixed populations of inner Eurasia, reflecting the extensive Mongol-period and pre-Mongol Turkic-Mongol cultural and demographic exchange across the Eurasian steppe.
Typical Kazakh Phenotypes
Reference for AI generation — hair, eyes, skin, facial structure, build
Skin tone is predominantly Fitzpatrick II-IV with III the modal value, intermediate between East Asian and West Asian/European source populations. Hair is most often straight to wavy (Andre Walker 1A-2A), predominantly black to dark brown with non-trivial frequencies of medium brown and lighter shades. Facial features show admixture variance — most individuals present with epicanthic-fold variants at moderate to high frequency, broader-than-Iranian / narrower-than-East-Asian nasal bridges, prominent cheekbones (the broader 'Mongolic' face shape is characteristic), and rounded face shapes. Eye color is predominantly brown but with elevated frequencies of hazel, green, and rarely blue variants compared to unmixed East Asian populations. Build is robust; adult Kazakh male mean stature is approximately 175 cm in 2010s-2020s cohorts. Within-population variance is moderate; northern Kazakhstan Kazakh populations show somewhat higher East Asian admixture than western Kazakhstan Kazakh populations (closer to the Aral region and the Turkmen border), reflecting historical migration and admixture patterns.
