About Crimean Tatar People
Crimean Tatars (Qırımtatarlar) comprise approximately 0.5% of the Ukrainian population — concentrated in Crimea (Ukrainian-claimed but Russian-occupied since 2014). The Crimean Tatars are Turkic-language Sunni Muslim community, descendants of the medieval Crimean Khanate (1441-1783) populations plus subsequent demographic continuity. The historic Crimean Tatar population of approximately 200,000+ was deported to Central Asia in 1944 under Stalin's Operation Lentil — academic estimates place mortality at 18-46% of the deported population during the deportation and subsequent first years in Central Asia. Substantial post-1989 return to Crimea brought the Crimean Tatar population to approximately 250,000+ by 2014; the 2014 Russian annexation has produced documented post-2014 persecution including arbitrary detentions, the banning of the Mejlis (the Crimean Tatar representative body), and substantial Crimean Tatar emigration to mainland Ukraine.
