What that began, ranching finished. Through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries cattle and cotton pushed into the savanna, and by the middle of the last century ethnographers were writing about the Chimila in the past tense. They were wrong, but not by much: the population that came out of that century is counted in the low thousands. In 1990 a titled reserve, Issa Oristunna, was established in the municipality of Sabanas de San Ángel, the first ground the Chimila have legally held in a very long time. It sits in a part of Colombia that spent the following two decades under armed groups, which is the ordinary shape of Chimila history: a small recovery, immediately contested.
