About Aurunci People
The Aurunci were an Italic people of the Tyrrhenian coast between Latium and Campania, in the hill country around the extinct Roccamonfina volcano and the mountains that still bear their name. They are attested from the end of the sixth century BC to the end of the fourth, when Rome broke them, planted colonies on their land and absorbed what was left into the Roman citizen body. No community today calls itself Auruncan, but the towns of Sessa Aurunca, Minturno and Ausonia, and the Monti Aurunci above them, keep the name on the map.
Greek writers called them Ausones, and Aurunci is simply the Latin rendering of the same word. Their country was Ausonia, and that term did something unusual: it outgrew the people who wore it. Greek poets stretched Ausonia to mean lower Italy, and Roman poets, Virgil above all, stretched it further to mean Italy itself, so that a small hill tribe ended up lending its name to the whole peninsula. As far as can be told they spoke an Oscan-type dialect of the Sabellic branch of Italic, the same broad family as Samnite and Campanian, though almost nothing of it survives in writing. Their gods are equally thin in the record, with one exception: Marica, a goddess of marsh and river mouth, whose grove at the outlet of the Liris, today's Garigliano, drew offerings from at least the sixth century BC, long before Roman Minturnae grew up beside it.
Their history is really a history of pressure. Livy has them clashing with Rome as early as the 500s BC over towns on the Latin and Volscian frontier. By the mid fourth century they were being squeezed from every side: Volsci to the north, the Sidicini of Teanum inland, Samnites behind them, and Rome pushing down the coast. In 337 BC the Sidicini attacked and the Aurunci abandoned their old capital of Aurunca on the volcano's flank, moving down to Suessa. The end came during the Second Samnite War. In 314 BC three Ausonian towns, Ausona, Minturnae and Vescia, went over to the Samnites. A group of young nobles betrayed them to Rome, and Livy says the people were slaughtered almost to extinction. Within a generation Rome had founded a Latin colony at Suessa Aurunca and citizen colonies at Minturnae and Sinuessa, and the Auruncan name became a matter of geography rather than of people.
What survives is mostly what Rome built on top of them: the theater and aqueduct at Minturnae, the streets of Sessa Aurunca, and a poetic name for Italy that most Italians have used without ever knowing whom it once belonged to.
