They are Roma who put down roots long ago in the towns of the southern Balkans, in the mahalas of Skopje, Prizren and many smaller places. They draw a clear line between themselves and neighboring Romani groups such as the Džambazi and Gurbeti, even when outsiders lump everyone together. In North Macedonia and Kosovo they are among the largest Romani communities, and their dialect, Arli, became the basis for written Romani in North Macedonia. Arli belongs to the Balkan branch of Romani, an Indo-Aryan language whose speakers' ancestors left South Asia more than a thousand years ago. Centuries of Ottoman rule packed it with Turkish words. Few Arlije speak only one language: they use Romani at home and switch to Macedonian, Albanian, Serbian or Turkish depending on the town and the conversation.
