About Urums People

The Tsalka Urums, who came into the Trialeti highlands of southern Georgia from Erzurum, Kars and Gumushane after the Russo-Turkish war of 1828 and 1829, speak an Oghuz variety close to Anatolian Turkish. Both wrote their Turkic in Greek letters when they wrote it at all, the same habit as the Karamanlides of central Anatolia.
The Azov community dates itself from 1778, when Catherine II emptied the Crimean Khanate of its Christians and took its artisans and taxpayers with them. Greeks and Armenians walked north in the late autumn under Metropolitan Ignatius, thousands died in the first winter on open steppe, and the survivors founded Mariupol and a ring of villages named for the Crimean places they had left: Staryi Krym, Mangush, Yalta.
