Few scholars take the brothers literally, but the tale shows that Kievan writers saw the two peoples as a pair.
Their political record is short and unflattering. They paid tribute to the Khazars until 885, when Oleg of Kiev sent envoys to ask who received it and then told them to pay him instead. They paid him a shilling each, just as they had paid the Khazars. In 984 Vladimir the Great moved against them, and his commander, known as Wolf's Tail, routed them on the Pishchana River. The chronicler preserves the jibe that followed: the people of the Pishchana run from a wolf's tail.
Their religion was Slavic paganism. The monastic chronicler lumped them together with the Vyatichi and Severians and described customs he considered beastly: brides carried off by prior agreement at festivities held between villages, men with two or three wives, and the dead burned on a pyre, their bones gathered into a small vessel and set on a post beside the road. Excavated mounds confirm a long tradition of cremation that later gave way to burying the body whole. Christianity followed Vladimir's baptism of Rus' in 988 but reached the countryside slowly.
Most of their land passed to the principality of Chernigov, where towns such as Gomel and Chechersk grew up, and by the end of the 12th century the tribal name fades from the record. The people did not vanish; the name did.
