Ukrainians (Ukrayintsi) are an East Slavic ethnic group — pre-2022 approximately 33M+ in Ukraine, plus the substantial global Ukrainian diaspora (~12-15M+ pre-2022 plus the post-2022 substantial new diaspora — ~8M Ukrainian refugees outside Ukraine as of 2024 predominantly in Poland ~960,000+, Germany ~1.1M+, Czech Republic ~340,000+, plus communities in the United States ~1M+ pre-2022, Canada ~1.4M+, Italy, the United Kingdom, plus globally). The Ukrainian ethnogenesis traces continuously to the East Slavic populations of the Kievan Rus' (~9th-13th c. CE) plus subsequent population processes. Predominantly Eastern Orthodox Christian (the Orthodox Church of Ukraine became autocephalous in 2019, replacing the historic subordination to the Russian Orthodox Church) plus substantial Greek Catholic (Eastern-rite Catholic, predominantly in western Ukraine). The Ukrainian language is part of the East Slavic family — distinct from Russian (Russian and Ukrainian are mutually intelligible to some degree but have substantial differences). The 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea and the 2022 Russian full-scale invasion have produced massive demographic disruption with documented mass civilian casualties (estimated 100,000+ Ukrainian civilian and military deaths) plus the substantial refugee outflow.
