The pressure did not stop there. Gas projects, armed groups and tourists on the snowfields of El Cocuy have all pushed in on the Resguardo Unido U'wa, the collective reserve recognized in 1999. In 2016, U'wa protests over climbers on sacred peaks led authorities to close the national park for a time, and the U'wa's long dispute with the Colombian state has gone before the Inter-American human rights system. Day to day, most U'wa live in small, scattered communities such as Cobaría and Tegría. They speak their own language at home and treat the mountain as something to look after, not to use up.
