About Teushen People
The Teushen, also recorded as Tehues, were hunter-gatherers of the Patagonian interior in southern Argentina. They were still known as a separate people in the nineteenth century, then disappeared as a distinct group, most likely absorbed into the wider Tehuelche population whose descendants live in Chubut and Santa Cruz today. Two things set them apart: their territory and their language. They held the middle of the steppe, with the Tehuelche to the south and the Puelche to the north. The few written sources that name them treat them as a people in their own right, not as a band belonging to either neighbor.
Anthropologists call them foot nomads, and the label matters. Horses spread into Patagonia during the eighteenth century and changed life on the steppe, letting mounted bands travel far and trade widely. The Teushen belonged to the older way of life. They walked their country, hunting guanaco and rhea with the bows and bolas common across Patagonia and gathering plant foods where the dry land allowed. As with every hunting people of the region, guanaco hide supplied most of what they owned: shelter, bedding, and the heavy fur cape worn against the wind.
Their language is gone. It survives only as a short vocabulary written down in the nineteenth century. On that thin evidence, linguists usually place it in the Chon family, alongside Tehuelche and the Selk'nam and Haush languages of Tierra del Fuego. The classification is reasonable but not certain. The same lack of evidence blurs the edges of the people themselves: the surviving sources cannot say exactly where the Teushen ended and their Tehuelche neighbors began.
Two shocks ended their world. The horse pulled foot hunters into mounted bands or left them at a disadvantage. Then the Argentine military campaigns of the 1870s and 1880s, together with epidemic disease, ended independent Indigenous life across Patagonia. Today the Teushen name lives mainly on ethnographic maps and in tables of languages. The wider Tehuelche heritage they merged into is carried by living communities in Chubut and Santa Cruz, and that is the best place to look for whatever of the Teushen endures.
