About Tatar Russia People

Russian Tatars comprise approximately 3.9% of the Russian population — the second-largest ethnic group in Russia. Concentrated in Tatarstan (where Tatars comprise ~53% of the regional population) plus Bashkortostan, Volga and Ural regions, plus substantial Tatar diaspora across the former Soviet states (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Belarus, plus globally). The Tatar language is part of the Kipchak Turkic family. Predominantly Sunni Muslim (Hanafi). The Tatars are descended from the medieval Volga Bulgarian-Mongol-Kipchak source populations of the Golden Horde and successor Khanates plus subsequent demographic continuity. Major sub-groups: Volga-Ural Tatars (the largest), Crimean Tatars (separately enumerated and distinct, deported to Central Asia in 1944, with substantial post-1989 return to Crimea), Siberian Tatars, plus other regional sub-populations.
