About Don Slavs People

The Don Slavs built hillforts on steep river bluffs, lived in semi-sunken timber houses, grew grain and kept livestock. Their handmade pottery is close to that of the Romny culture farther west, which is usually tied to the Severians. The two are so alike that archaeologists often treat them as one Romny-Borshevo zone. Some scholars go further and count the Don Slavs as a southern branch of the Vyatichi. They followed the pre-Christian religion of the early Slavs. They cremated their dead and buried the ashes under small mounds, sometimes inside wooden enclosures that researchers call houses of the dead. Politically they lived in the Khazar orbit. The Russian Primary Chronicle says the neighboring Vyatichi and Severians paid tribute to the Khazars, and the Don settlements sat even closer to Khazar territory. Arabic geographers of the period wrote of a river of the Slavs in this part of Eastern Europe, and some historians identify it with the Don.
The end came when that order broke down. Sviatoslav of Kiev shattered Khazar power in the 960s, and the usual explanation for what followed is Pecheneg pressure on the forest steppe. By the early 11th century the Don hillforts had been abandoned. For centuries afterward the region was a contested frontier, later called the Wild Field, and Voronezh itself was founded as a Muscovite fortress only in 1586. Today the Don Slavs stand as an archaeological record of how far Slavic farmers pushed toward the steppe before the steppe pushed back. They should not be confused with the Don Cossacks, a much later people of the lower Don.
