About Krobyzoi People
The Krobyzoi were a Thracian people of the lower Danube. From at least the late sixth century BC into the Roman period, they lived between the river and the Balkan range, in what is now Dobruja and northeastern Bulgaria. No community carries their name today. They were absorbed into the provincial population of Roman Moesia, and no line of descent from them can be traced.
We know them as a distinct people mainly because the Greeks on the Black Sea shore kept naming them. Hecataeus of Miletus listed them around 500 BC. Herodotus described three rivers that ran down from the Haemus mountains and through the land of the Krobyzian Thracians into the Danube. Later writers placed them in the countryside behind the Greek colonies of Istros, Tomis and Odessos. The Krobyzoi left no writing of their own, so everything we know about them comes from outsiders looking inland from the coast.
They spoke a Thracian language. Thracian was a branch of the Indo-European family that survives almost entirely in place names, personal names and a few words recorded by Greeks, so nothing specifically Krobyzian can be picked out of it. Their neighbors made for a crowded map: Getae along the Danube, Odrysians and other Thracians to the south, Scythians moving into Dobruja from the steppe, and Greek colonists on the coast. Many historians treat the Krobyzoi as a branch of the Getae or close kin to them, and ancient writers blurred that line too. The Greek historian Hellanicus grouped them with peoples who believed the dead did not simply perish but went to the god Zalmoxis. Greek writers found that belief striking enough to record more than once.
Their homeland was fought over for centuries. In the fifth century BC the Odrysian kingdom claimed land as far as the mouth of the Danube. In 339 BC Philip II of Macedon defeated the Scythian king Ateas on the lower Danube. Rome took the region in the late first century BC and made it part of Moesia, which was later split to form the province of Scythia Minor. Somewhere in that sequence the Krobyzoi stopped being a name worth writing down. What remains of them is a few lines in Herodotus and Strabo, plus an open question for historians and archaeologists studying the Thracian hillforts and burials inland from the Bulgarian and Romanian Black Sea coast.
