About Kists People

Nearly everyone also speaks Georgian, and surnames carry the Georgian shvili ending: Margoshvili, Khangoshvili, Batirashvili. Kinship still runs through the teip, the father's-line clan, and a council of elders has a real role in settling disputes and dealing with the state.
Kists are Sunni Muslims, and the older religious life of the gorge is Sufi. It is rooted in the Qadiri tradition that Kunta-Haji Kishiev spread among Chechens in the nineteenth century.
