That image led nineteenth-century travelers to a romantic theory that Khevsurs were descended from stranded Crusaders. The theory does not hold up. The armor, the cross motifs and the fighting habits all belong to a Georgian mountain culture that grew up on its own terms.
The region splits along the watershed. Piraketa Khevsureti, this side, drains south toward the Aragvi. Pirikita Khevsureti, the other side, lies north of the ridge along the upper Argun, where the stone tower villages of Shatili and Mutso stand. Getting there still means crossing the Datvisjvari Pass, which is shut by snow for months at a time. Beyond the border are Chechen and Ingush lands, and over the generations that neighbor meant raids and blood feuds as often as trade.
Khevsurs speak a dialect of Georgian, part of the Kartvelian family, and have a strong tradition of oral poetry. Religion is where they stand out most. Khevsurs are Orthodox Christians, but for a long time religious life centered on local shrines, called khati or jvari. Each shrine belonged to a community and was served by a khevisberi, a priest and elder, with helpers who brewed ritual beer and prepared animals for sacrifice. Strict purity rules governed the shrine grounds, and women were kept out of many of them. Childbirth took place in a separate hut outside the village. Summer shrine festivals still draw families back into the mountains.
The Soviet state broke the old pattern. In the 1950s the authorities moved much of the population down to the lowlands, and villages on the far side of the ridge emptied. Today most Khevsurs live in lowland Georgia and in Tbilisi, while Shatili and the other high settlements fill up in summer with returning families, herders and hikers. Khevsur embroidery, with dense crosses and geometric figures worked onto dark cloth, is still one of Georgia's most recognizable folk styles.
