About Janjevci People
The Janjevci are Catholics in a place where being Catholic was always the smallest option. Their speech marks the same isolation. It is an old Shtokavian carried inland from the coast and then left to sit for six hundred years among Torlak-speaking neighbors, so it took on Kosovo grammar and a heavy freight of Turkish and Albanian vocabulary while keeping forms that sound archaic to anyone from Zagreb. Bilingualism in Albanian was ordinary. A second Catholic pocket lies east of them around Letnica, near Vitina, where the shrine of the Black Madonna draws an August pilgrimage that has never been only Catholic: Orthodox Serbs, Muslim Albanians and Roma walk it too, and the young Agnes Bojaxhiu, later Mother Teresa, was among the pilgrims. Janjevo itself lived on trade and craft, filigree and metalwork first, then, in socialist Yugoslavia, an improbable cottage industry in plastic. Toys, rosaries, trinkets, sold by Janjevo families at markets from Slovenia to Macedonia, until "Janjevac" became Yugoslav shorthand for a man with a suitcase of goods.
The wars ended that. Through the 1990s and after 1999 nearly the entire community left for Croatia, much of it resettled in Kistanje in the Dalmatian hinterland and in the outer districts of Zagreb, where they arrived as Croats and were frequently treated as something else. A few hundred remain in Janjevo, mostly older, keeping the church of Saint Nicholas open. The rest are a diaspora that still names itself for a village most of its members have never lived in.
