About Janjevci People

Through the 1990s and after 1999 nearly the entire community left for Croatia, much of it resettled in Kistanje in the Dalmatian hinterland and in the outer districts of Zagreb, where they arrived as Croats and were frequently treated as something else. A few hundred remain in Janjevo, mostly older, keeping the church of Saint Nicholas open. The rest are a diaspora that still names itself for a village most of its members have never lived in.
