About Epeians People
The Epeians were the people of Elis, in the northwestern Peloponnese of Greece, during the heroic age that Greek tradition placed before and during the Trojan War, roughly the late Bronze Age. Their land and ruling line later passed to the Eleans, the classical Greeks who ran the sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia. Nearly everything known about them comes from Homer and from later writers who retold the same legends, so they stand where history and epic blur. In those sources three things mark them as a group: a name, a territory and a royal house. They held the plain of Elis and the district of Buprasion, and their kings claimed descent from Endymion.
Pausanias records how Endymion made his sons race for the throne at Olympia. Epeius won and gave the people his name. His brother Aetolus, who ruled after him, was later exiled across the water to the north, and the country he settled became Aetolia. A later king, Eleius, renamed the people Eleans. The story reads as an ancient explanation for why one country answered to two names, and ancient geographers still argued over whether the Epeians and the Eleans were one people or two.
Homer gives them a harder edge. In the Iliad the aged Nestor recalls a border war from his youth. The Pylians raided cattle in Elis to recover what the Epeians owed his father, and the Epeians struck back, besieged the town of Thryoessa on the Alpheus River and were driven off. Their king in that story is Augeas. He is the same Augeas whose stables Heracles cleaned and who then refused to pay him, a quarrel that ended in war. The twin warriors called the Moliones fought for the Epeians in both tales.
At Troy, the Catalogue of Ships credits them with forty ships under four commanders, including sons of the Moliones and a grandson of Augeas. During the funeral games for Patroclus, Nestor looks back once more, to games held at Buprasion for the dead lord Amarynceus. He claims he won every event there except the chariot race. Athletic contests run through their whole tradition, which suits a people whose old country held Olympia.
Their end belongs to the legends of the Dorian return. Aetolian settlers under Oxylus crossed into Elis, and from then on its people went by the name Eleans. The Epeian name lives on in epic and in Elean family trees, a heroic past for the region that went on to host the Olympic Games.
