About Chachi People
The Chachi are the people of the rivers in northwestern Ecuador, and that is not a figure of speech. They call themselves Chachi, close to the people, and their language Cha'palaa, the people's speech. It belongs to the small Barbacoan family, whose nearest surviving relative is Tsafiki, spoken by the Tsachila inland. It has no relation to Quechua or to the Spanish pressing in on every side, and its survival in a province this exposed to logging and plantation agriculture is not a given. Chachi oral history holds that the ancestors came down from the highlands near Ibarra, retreating from the Spanish into country the conquest did not want. What they found on the coast was another people arriving under duress: the Afro-Esmeraldenos, descended from Africans who escaped or were shipwrecked here in the sixteenth century. Four centuries of proximity followed, with trade, intermarriage, mutual suspicion and shared music in it, and the marimba heard at a Chachi festival belongs to that long conversation.
Catholicism arrived early and stayed, though in a form most priests would find irregular, running alongside healers who treat the spirits held to cause illness. Evangelical missions have made real inroads in recent decades. Outside Ecuador the Chachi are known mainly for weaving: baskets, mats and hammocks worked from rampira palm, sold downriver and, increasingly, to buyers who never come upriver at all. Their territory now abuts a protected reserve on one side and oil palm and timber concessions on the other, and the federation that speaks for the Chachi centers spends most of its energy on exactly that boundary.
