Bosniaks comprise approximately 50% of the Bosnian population per the 2013 Census — about 1.8M+ in Bosnia and Herzegovina, plus the substantial Bosniak diaspora globally (~2-3M+ predominantly in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the United States, plus Sandžak Bosniaks in Serbia ~145,000+ and Montenegro ~53,000+). Predominantly Sunni Muslim (the South Slavic Muslim community whose ethnogenesis traces to the medieval Bosnian Church Bogumil tradition plus subsequent Ottoman-period mass conversion to Islam). The Bosniak ethnic identity was formally adopted in 1993 (replacing the earlier 'Muslim' national designation used in Yugoslav-era enumeration). The community was subject to documented genocide during the 1992-1995 Bosnian War — the Srebrenica genocide (July 1995) killed an estimated 8,372 Bosniak men and boys, the most documented mass killing in Europe since WWII; the broader Bosnian War killed approximately 100,000+ predominantly Bosniak civilians.
