About Belli People
The Belli were a Celtiberian people of the middle Ebro basin, in the country watered by the Jalón and Jiloca rivers in what is now Aragon, northeastern Spain. They enter the written record in the second century BC on Iron Age roots several centuries deeper, and they ceased to exist as a distinct people during Rome's long absorption of the peninsular interior. No community descends from them by name: their line runs into the general population of Aragon, and what is left of them is archaeological. Their chief town was Segeda, on the plain near modern Mara in Zaragoza province, and it struck its own coinage reading sekaisa in the Celtiberian script, a semi-syllabary borrowed from Iberian neighbors to the east and forced to fit a Celtic language. That language, Celtiberian, is among the earliest recorded Celtic anywhere and is still only partly understood. Two of their habits are worth knowing. Communities and individuals sealed pacts of hospitality with small bronze tokens, often cut in the shape of an animal or a pair of clasped hands and split into halves that matched only each other, inscribed with the names of the parties. And Greek and Roman writers report that Celtiberians left men killed in battle where they fell, for vultures, on the understanding that the birds carried them up rather than merely ate them. Diodorus adds that their smiths buried sheets of iron until the weak metal rusted away, then forged blades from what survived.
Their moment in the wider record came in 154 BC, when they set about enlarging Segeda's walls and bringing the smaller Titti inside them. Rome called this a breach of the treaty Tiberius Gracchus had imposed a generation earlier. The Belli answered that the treaty barred founding new towns, not fortifying an old one. Rome sent a consular army anyway, and to get it into the field earlier in the season the Senate moved the start of the consular year forward to the first of January, where it has stayed. New Year's Day is a scheduling decision made in order to fight these people. The Belli abandoned Segeda and took shelter with the Arevaci at Numantia, and a Segedan named Carus ambushed the Roman column in dense woodland, killing thousands before he was cut down himself. What followed was twenty years of Celtiberian war, ending with the siege and destruction of Numantia in 133 BC. Segeda was rebuilt afterward on a nearby site, on Roman terms, which is the whole story in miniature.
