About Atikum People
The Atikum are a people of the Serra do Umã, a high plateau rising out of the dry sertão of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil. The Atikum learned it with help from the Tuxá, a people of the São Francisco River, and danced it for the inspectors. Scholars have made much of this. For the Atikum the point is simpler: the Toré has been theirs for more than seventy years. It is bound up with the Jurema tradition, in which the encantados, ancestral spirits, are called on for guidance and healing. Most Atikum are also Catholic, and saints' feasts and Toré nights share the same calendar without much sense of contradiction.
Portuguese is the only language in daily use. Like almost every Indigenous people of the northeastern interior, the Atikum lost their ancestral language over centuries of missions, cattle ranching and land seizure. Nearby peoples such as the Pankararu, Truká and Kambiwá share much of that history and many of the same ritual forms.
Life on the serra means small farming in a punishing climate, with beans, corn and cassava grown on plots that depend on rain that often fails. Villages are scattered across the plateau. Community politics run through rival factions that compete over leadership, land and government resources. Their territory, the Terra Indígena Atikum, was formally demarcated in the 1990s after years of pressure. The plateau also sits inside a stretch of the Pernambuco sertão known for illegal cannabis growing. Police eradication campaigns brought heavy force and a lasting stigma to communities across the area, the Atikum included. They now number several thousand, one of the larger Indigenous populations in Pernambuco.
