Their territory probably reached as far as Vyšehrad, the rock above the Vltava that faces Prague Castle across the river, which put two ambitious ruling houses almost within sight of each other. They spoke the West Slavic speech that later became Czech, and they left no writing of their own. Christianity reached their leaders during the 9th and 10th centuries, as it did across Bohemia, and it was laid over older Slavic belief rather than wiping it out overnight.
The best-known story about them is a legend told in later Czech chronicles. In it, Radslav, prince of Kouřim, rose against Duke Wenceslaus. The two agreed to settle the matter in single combat, but Radslav saw a sign of heaven's favor on his opponent and knelt instead of fighting. It is a saint's legend, not history. Still, it shows how the Zlicans were remembered: as the neighbors the Přemyslids had to bring to heel before they could rule all of Bohemia.
By the later 10th century their lands are usually linked with the Slavník family, based at Libice, whose domain in eastern Bohemia acted almost like a separate state. That ended on 28 September 995, when Přemyslid forces stormed Libice and killed the Slavníks they found there. Adalbert of Prague, the Slavník who served as bishop, survived only because he was out of the country. Kouřim stayed a regional seat under the Přemyslids, and the old hillfort is now an archaeological site. Historians still debate how well the tribal map of early Bohemia fits what actually existed, since much of it comes from sources written centuries later.
