About Zamzizi People
The Zamzizi were a small West Slavic tribe of the tenth century who lived on the middle Elbe in what is now Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, and who disappeared as a distinct people during the German settlement of the region over the following two or three centuries. They are one of the Wendish tribes that Latin scribes wrote down once and then forgot. The name survives only in a handful of charters issued by Otto I for the church of Magdeburg in the 960s and 970s, spelled Zamzizi or Zemzizi, where it appears among the Slavic districts whose tithes the emperor was handing to his new archbishopric. Almost nothing else is written about them. They enter history as a line item in a tax grant, and they leave it the same way.
What the charters do fix is the neighborhood. The Zamzizi sat in the seam between the Sorbian tribes of the Saale and Mulde country to the south and the Havel Slavs to the north, with the Ciervisti around Zerbst as close neighbors. The exact stretch of river they held, and which bank, is still argued over. Like the rest of the Elbe Slavs they would have lived in small open villages of timber and clay, grown rye and millet, kept pigs and cattle, and pulled back behind ring-walled forts when raiders came. They were pagans: nothing specific about their cult is recorded. The Ottonian push east under Margrave Gero in the 930s and 940s folded their land into the frontier march, reorganized it around garrisoned burgwards, and after 968 placed it under the new archbishop of Magdeburg, whose priests were expected to baptize them and whose collectors were expected to arrive first. The great Slav rising of 983 undid German rule north of the Elbe for well over a century, but the Zamzizi never resurface in the record, whichever side of the new frontier they landed on. In the twelfth century the Ascanian lords of the region and the archbishops of Magdeburg brought Flemish and Saxon settlers into the Fläming and the Elbe lowlands, and the Slavic villages were absorbed, renamed, or left as Wendish hamlets beside the new German ones until the speech itself faded in the later Middle Ages.
Their legacy is thin but real. Slavic place names thick across the Anhalt countryside mark where their villages stood, and the closest living relatives of whatever they spoke are Upper and Lower Sorbian, still spoken in Lusatia to the southeast. Their descendants, if the word applies, are simply the German-speaking people of the middle Elbe today.
