About Wiwa People
The Wiwa are one of four peoples who hold the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the block of glaciated mountain that rises out of the Caribbean in northern Colombia and reaches almost 5,700 meters within forty kilometers of the sea. Where the Kogi keep to the cold upper reaches and the Arhuaco to the southwestern valleys, the Wiwa occupy the warm southeastern flank, in the Cesar and Ranchería drainages across the departments of Cesar, La Guajira and Magdalena. Their name points at that: it carries the sense of warm country and of what grows there. Outsiders have called them Arsario, Malayo, Sanká and Guamaca, mostly after the places they live rather than anything they call themselves.
What organizes Wiwa life is the Law of Origin, a body of instruction held by the mamos, ritual specialists trained from childhood through long apprenticeships of fasting, night work and divination, with women authorities, sagas, alongside them. The four peoples of the Sierra consider themselves the Elder Brothers, charged with keeping the world in balance on behalf of everyone else, and the work is literal: offerings, called pagamentos, made at particular springs, lagoons, stones and river mouths, many of them far down on the coastal plain and well outside the reservations. Colombia recognizes that circuit of sites as the Línea Negra, a legal boundary drawn around the massif in sacred points rather than survey lines.
They speak Damana, a Chibchan language, sister to Kogi and Ika; the Kankuamo, the fourth people, lost theirs and have spent decades rebuilding an identity without it. Households farm several altitudes at once, coffee, plantain and sugarcane low down, tubers higher up, and villages sit mostly empty between ceremonial gatherings. Initiated men carry the poporo, a gourd of lime made from burnt seashell, worked with coca leaves the women pick and toast; the crust that builds around its neck is a record of a man's thinking. The Wiwa descend from the Tairona chiefdoms that Spanish Santa Marta broke in the sixteenth century, and the retreat upslope has repeated since: marijuana growers in the 1970s, then coca, then the paramilitaries and guerrillas who made the eastern Sierra one of the worst places in Colombia to be Indigenous. In 2009 the Constitutional Court named the Wiwa among the peoples at risk of extermination. Many displaced families have since gone back up.
