About Ulichs People
The Ulichs were an East Slavic people of the ninth and tenth centuries, settled in the open country north of the Black Sea, and they are gone: absorbed, scattered, or pushed west until the chronicles stop naming them. What set them apart in their own time was position. They held the last Slavic ground before the steppe, along the lower Dnieper and the Southern Bug, where the farming villages ran out and the grass and the horsemen began. Their name is usually read from a word for an angle or a bend, probably the great turn of the Dnieper, though the etymology has never been settled. A ninth century Frankish list of eastern peoples credits them, as the Unlizi, with three hundred and eighteen towns, a number nobody takes literally but which says something about how large outsiders thought they were.
They spoke a dialect of Old East Slavic, close enough to that of the Tivertsi, their neighbors toward the Dniester, that the two are named together in almost every source mentioning either. Their religion was the pre-Christian Slavic one, and they drop out of the record before the baptism of Rus in 988, so they were never really part of Christian Kiev. What is remembered of them is mostly a war. They refused tribute to the Kievan princes, and Igor's commander Sveneld sat outside their town of Peresechen for three years before it fell, around 940. The Ulichs then moved, out of the Dnieper country into the land between the Bug and the Dniester. It bought them a generation. The Pechenegs were pressing behind them and Kiev in front, and by the end of the tenth century the name is no longer used for anybody.
They left no writing of their own, so what survives is other people's paperwork and what comes out of the ground: hillforts, sunken floor houses, the hand shaped and wheel made pottery of the Luka-Raykovetska culture, which archaeologists connect to them without being able to prove it settlement by settlement. Even Peresechen is unlocated, argued over between candidate sites in Moldova and others near the Dnieper. Their country became the southern rim of Kievan Rus and later the Ukrainian steppe frontier, and whatever population stayed put sits somewhere inside the ancestry of Ukrainians today.
