About Severians People
The Severians were an East Slavic tribe who lived from about the eighth to the eleventh century along the Desna, Seym and Sula rivers, in what is now northeastern Ukraine and the adjoining Russian borderland around Kursk and Bryansk. They dissolved into Kievan Rus' and drop out of the chronicles after 1024, but the name outlived them: it survives in Novhorod-Siverskyi, in the old regional name Siveria, and in the Siverskyi Donets river, and they are counted among the ancestors of Ukrainians and Russians alike.
Position defined them. They held the forest-steppe edge where the Slavic world met the Khazar Khaganate, and for part of the ninth century they paid the Khazars tribute, reportedly a squirrel pelt and a coin per household. The Primary Chronicle has Oleg of Novgorod taking them from the Khazars in the 880s on lighter terms, after which they formed the core of what became the Chernihiv principality. Their last recorded act is at the Battle of Listven in 1024, when Mstislav of Chernihiv put them in the center of his line against his brother's Varangians. They held, and the Varangians broke.
Archaeologists know them as the Romny culture: small hillforts on river promontories, half-sunken houses with clay ovens, cremation under low mounds. The one object that reads as unmistakably Severian is the spiral temple ring, a tight coil of bronze or silver wire that women wore in pairs beside the face, hung from a headband. They were pagan until Christianity spread out from Chernihiv in the late tenth century, and the Kievan monk who wrote the chronicle, with little patience for the forest tribes, describes them and their neighbors taking wives by prearranged capture at games held between villages and setting the ashes of the dead in vessels on posts beside the road. The name itself probably means northerners, though they were far from the northernmost Slavs. That mismatch has fed a long argument over an Iranian root, or a link to the Severi, a Slavic group settled in the Balkans by the Bulgars in the 680s. Neither reading has won, and the Severians themselves left no word on the matter.
