Romanians (Români) comprise approximately 89% of the Romanian population — about 17.0M+ in Romania, plus the substantial cross-border Romanian-Moldovan population (~2.5M+ in Moldova where the Moldovan / Romanian distinction is contested; separately enumerated under MD as moldovan-romanian) plus the substantial post-2007 EU-enlargement-era Romanian diaspora globally (~3-4M+ predominantly in Italy ~1.1M+, Spain ~600,000+, Germany ~900,000+, the United Kingdom ~700,000+, France, Israel, the United States, Canada, plus communities globally). The Romanian ethnogenesis traces continuously to the Romance-Latin-language populations descended from the Roman colonization of Dacia (106-271 CE) plus the substantial Indigenous-Dacian demographic substrate plus subsequent Slavic, Magyar, Pecheneg, and Ottoman influences. Predominantly Eastern Orthodox Christian (~85% of population, the Romanian Orthodox Church). The Romanian language is part of the Romance branch of Indo-European — the only Romance language in the broader Slavic-and-Hungarian-speaking Eastern European zone.
