About Pomaks People
The Pomaks do not fit the tidy boxes Balkan nation-states prefer: they speak a Slavic tongue close to Bulgarian, and they are Muslim. Their heartland is the Rhodope Mountains, a range of pine forest and deep river gorges straddling the border between Bulgaria and Greece, with smaller communities around Lovech and Teteven in central Bulgaria. Village life there long ran on tobacco, sheep and timber, with the mosque at the center and small fields cut into steep slopes. On the Greek side, around Xanthi and Komotini, Pomaks belong to the Muslim minority of Thrace recognized by the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne. Most Pomaks today, though, live in Turkey, descended from families who fled Bulgaria in successive waves from the late nineteenth century onward. Their speech belongs to the Rhodope dialects of Bulgarian, some of the most archaic varieties of South Slavic, and in Greece it is usually just called Pomak. Pomaks there often grow up with three languages: the dialect at home, Turkish in minority schools and Greek from the state. That layering tracks a long argument over who they are. Bulgaria counts them as Bulgarian Muslims, many in Greece and Turkey identify as Turks, and others insist on Pomak as a people of its own or simply call themselves Muslims. Even the origin of the name is uncertain, and not everyone it could describe wants it.
Pomaks are Sunni Muslims, and how their ancestors converted under the Ottomans is still disputed: Bulgarian national histories long insisted on the sword, while many historians describe a slower shift spread over generations. Modern history has pressed hard on them. After the Russo-Turkish War of 1877 and 1878, villages around Tamrash refused the new Christian-led administration and governed themselves for several years. During the Balkan Wars, Bulgarian authorities baptized Pomak villages en masse, a campaign soon reversed, and later drives in the 1940s and again in the 1960s and 1970s forced Bulgarian names on whole communities. In Greece, Pomak villages sat inside a restricted border zone, entered only with permits, until the mid-1990s. Faith and family set the rhythm of village life: Ramadan, the feast of sacrifice, circumcision celebrations and weddings that fill a village for days. In Ribnovo, in Bulgaria's western Rhodopes, winter brides are still presented with faces painted white and set with colored sequins, and they keep their eyes closed while shown to their guests.
