Their name comes from pole, the Slavic word for open field. They held the cleared country on both banks of the river, from Liubech down to Rodnia near the mouth of the Ros'. Some of their neighbors were also named for the land they lived on: the Drevlians for the forests to the west, the Dregovichs for the marshes to the north. Almost everything written about the Polans comes from the Primary Chronicle, which monks in Kyiv put together in the early 12th century, and it openly favors them. It says the Polans were mild and modest, kept the customs of their fathers, and married in an orderly way, with the bride brought to the groom's house. The Drevlians, by contrast, lived like beasts and carried off their brides. That is local pride, not ethnography, but it tells you who was writing the story.
The same chronicle gives the Polans the legend of how Kyiv was founded. Three brothers, Kyi, Shchek and Khoryv, and their sister Lybid settled the hills above the river and named the town after the eldest. Two of those names are still on the map, in Shchekavytsia hill and the Lybid river. In another story, the Khazars demanded tribute and the Polans paid it with one sword from each household. The Khazar elders looked at the double-edged blades and warned that this people would one day take tribute from them. In the later 9th century, warbands led by Scandinavians took Kyiv. The chronicle names Askold and Dir first, then Oleg, who seized the town around 882 and made it the capital of a new state. The Polans appear as a contingent in Rus' campaigns into the 10th century, and after that the name drops out of the record. They worshipped the old Slavic gods.
