About Meshchera People

Their country was not easy ground. The Meshchera Lowlands are flat, sandy and half drowned: peat bogs, shallow lakes, slow dark rivers, pine on the dry ridges. That terrain kept Slavic farmers on the margins for centuries and let a fishing, hunting and forest beekeeping people hold on well after their relatives to the north had gone. The decisive turn came from the steppe rather than from Moscow. Tatar lords were pressing into the middle Oka by the end of the thirteenth century, and in 1452 the grand prince of Moscow handed the district to a Kazan exile, creating the Kasimov Khanate on the old Meshchera heartland. For more than two centuries Finnic villagers lived under Muslim Tatar rulers who themselves served Orthodox Moscow. Some Meshchera turned Orthodox and Russian. Others, on one long-standing theory, turned Muslim and Tatar, which would explain the Mishar Tatars, whose name looks a great deal like Meshchera. The Russian princely house of Meshchersky traces its own line to a Tatar lord of the region, so the ethnonym ended up on a coat of arms rather than on a people.
The afterlife has been literary and ecological. Konstantin Paustovsky's sketches of the Meshchera side made its bogs and lakes a byword for quiet Russian wilderness, and two national parks now protect them. The horned kichka headdress and checked ponyova skirt of Ryazan peasant women, and the distinctive dialect of the Meshchera villages, are the closest anyone comes to seeing or hearing the tribe itself.
